Lesson 1, Topic 1
In Progress

Barotrauma of the Teeth

It arises in individuals with dental caries who have granulomas or dental nevitis and fillings.

Descent

It is due to increased pressure on the inflammatory structure that in these circumstances becomes extraordinarily sensitive to thermal or mechanical stimuli.

Ascent

Barotrauma is caused by the expansion of air trapped in cavities or poorly padded teeth.

It has happened several times that the fillings are expelled during the return to the surface and in more severe cases, there is even a fracture of the tooth.

PREVENTION

To avoid this accident, a visit to the dentist is required whenever there are dental problems, whatever they may be.

If at the beginning of the climb painful symptoms are started to appear, the diver should stop and descend a few meters until the pain disappears, after which the climb will restart very slowly, in order to allow the air to come out and consequently reduce the pressure inside the caries.

Prosthesis holders should pay particular attention to the fastness of fixation, which should be guaranteed by the specialist whenever this activity is intended or resumes after a long period of inactivity.

THIS BAROTRAUMA CAN BE VERIFIED BOTH ON THE DESCENT AND ON THE CLIMB
